WHAT IT IS: Nail pitting refers to pin-size depressions on the surface of nails.

 

HOW IT IS IDENTIFIED: The indentations in the above picture are often associated with psoriasis which typically causes silvery skin plaques on the extensor surfaces of joints. The nail pitting itself is often irregular in pattern and may affect one, some or all of the fingernails or even toenails.
